Pollen is a key ingredient in many cosmetic products, as well as natural remedies and supplements, due to its antioxidant properties. Find out below how you can prepare your own homemade pollen-based cream.
You can find all of the ingredients below, including the pollen extract, at your local health food store.
You will need:
– 3/4 cup of sweet almond oil (you can also use grape seed oil)
– 1/2 cup of coconut oil
– 15 grams of beeswax
– 100 ml distilled water
– 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
– 2 teaspoons of vitamin E (in liquid form)
– 10 grams pollen extract
Heat up the oils and wax in bain-marie, until the beeswax melts completely, stirring from time to time. In a different pot warm up the water just below boiling point.
After the wax has melted, remove both mixtures from the heat, and combine them by pouring the oils over the water, stirring constantly with a small whisk. When the mixture has cooled to hand temperature (if the bottom of the bowl is still hot to the touch, place it in a pot filled with cold water and keep whisking).
Once you get a creamy consistency, you can add the pollen, aloe vera and vitamin E. It’s important that the mixture is cool enough at this point, because these ingredients are vulnerable and tend to decompose at high temperatures.
Pour the cream in a small, preferably opaque glass jar, and leave it in the fridge for 24 hours. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant and it prevents the oils from going rancid, but it won’t protect against bacterial contamination, so make sure you keep the cream in the fridge and use it in 2 weeks time.
You can use this cream anywhere on your face or body, but remember that pollen is highly allergenic, so make sure you test in on a small area first.
