“Blueberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which slow down the aging process. They act as a shield against UV rays, protecting the skin against negative side effects ensuing from sun exposure, such as dryness, redness and premature aging”, says researcher Young-Hee Kang, coordinator of the studies conducted by the American Nutrition Society regarding the effects of blueberries on human skin.
“Antioxidants reverse the effects of free radicals, which have been associated with cell damage. It seems that only antioxidants from fruits with strong color provide adequate protection”, says Young-Hee Kang.
Summer is the perfect time to load up on fruit, so make sure you consume about 100 grams of blueberries at least 3 times a week, fresh or with a cup of plain low-fat yoghurt. For variation, you can also try pomegranates, cranberries, raspberries or strawberries.
But remember, beauty is only skin-deep, so focus more on being happy and healthy, rather than letting a couple of wrinkles ruin your mood.
